The Sheiling School, Thornbury

Camphill England and Wales

Main information

Type of service: Day schools, Residential schools, Schools

An independent school for pupils aged 6-19 years with special educational needs (SEN) and a community of the International Camphill Movement. A holistic therapeutic environment with a level of commitment to the needs of the pupils and constant liaison between education, care and therapy. An unusual degree of cohesion and continuity gives the pupils security, stability and confidence. Good Ofsted reports are available. Children and some co-workers live together in households on a beautiful private estate, with a number of weekly boarders and day pupils. Some care and education staff are resident and experienced Houseparents are responsible for the guidance and supervision of staff and co-workers. Each day is ordered according to a familiar routine. Food comes from the school’s biodynamic (organic plus) farm and gardens. Education is based on the Rudolf Steiner (Waldorf) Curriculum, adapted for pupils with special needs. The small classes are mixed groups including autism spectrum disorder (ASD), formed according to age rather than ability, with a degree of continuity among the Teachers. Block-period subject lessons are presented to the class as a whole. Literacy and other skills are taught one-to-one or in small groups. Pupils are able to develop skills in weaving, pottery, woodwork, baking and land work. As of March 2011 there are several day pupils, weekly boarders and full boarders vacancies in the age range of 6-19 years.
