Leicester City Learning Disability Partnership Board

Leicester City Council

Main information

Type of service: Learning Disability Partnership Boards

As part of Valuing People, the Government has asked each local council to set up a Partnership Board. Your Partnership Board meets regularly to talk about opportunities and support for people with learning disabilities in your area. Its job is to make sure that things get better for people with learning disabilities in your area. It should try to: Make services for people with learning disabilities better (like the support you get to do interesting things each day; support to live independently; and the opportunities to get around town); Help you have the same chance to use the services everyone uses (like going to classes, going swimming, doing sports and going to the cinema); Help different people to take part in the Board (like you, family carers, housing organisations, leisure services, colleges, social services, health services and other groups); and help with employment services like getting a job. Leicester City Learning Disability Partnership Board was set up in 2001 to make Valuing People happen for people living in the City. Valuing People says that people with learning disabilities should have the right to “Choice, Independence, Rights and Inclusion. The Partnership Board makes sure this happens. The Partnership Board meets 5 times a year and has about 40 members. It is co-chaired by a person with a learning disability and the Assistant Mayor with the responsibility for Adults Social Care. Other members include people with learning disabilities, carers, Councillors and key staff from the National Health Service, the Learning And Skills Council, the Voluntary and Independent Sectors, Children and Young Peoples Services, Adults Social Care, Housing and other City Council departments. The Partnership Board helps the City Council and its partners to plan and improve services for people with learning disabilities. This includes helping people to do the things they want to do during the day, evenings and weekends; supporting people to live in and be part of the community; helping people to use ordinary services like libraries and leisure centres and supporting people to learn new skill and to get paid work. The Partnership Board tries to make sure the needs of people with a learning disability are everyone's business.
